Reem Taoz Uses Hebrew to Outsmart Kidnappers

Reem Taoz

Originally from Israel, Reem Taoz currently resides and works in Lima, Peru, where he serves as the night shift manager of Grupo Taoz SAC and Lafromagerie SAC. In 2015, Reem Taoz made international headlines when he was kidnapped but managed to thwart his captors.

While in Bogota, Colombia, on business, Mr. Taoz hired a former police officer as his bodyguard, but his erstwhile protector turned around and abducted him, along with two other men. Amid threats of physical violence, Mr. Taoz’s captors demanded that he come up with $7.5 million to buy his freedom.

Mr. Taoz told the three men that he could get them their money, but he needed to make a call to arrange it. Since he was from Israel, Mr. Taoz’s captors thought nothing of it when he began speaking Hebrew during his call. Instead of talking to his bank, however, the kidnapped businessman phoned the city’s Israeli embassy, telling the staff what happened and where he was.

Soon, Colombian authorities arrived at the hotel where Mr. Taoz was being held. The security forces raided the location, saving and releasing him unharmed.
